Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
