Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
