EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
