At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
